ELOQUENT youngsters proved they are top of the class after winning a public speaking contest for the third time in a row.

A team of Year 7 and Year 8 students from Oxford Spires Academy, in Glanville Road, were crowned champions of the Winston Churchill Public Speaking Competition 2015 on Tuesday.Year 8 student Ilona Sell, 12, said: “It’s amazing because all the students were so good. We put a lot of work into it so I’m glad it paid off.”

The fourth annual contest, which took place at Blenheim Palace, aims to teach youngsters about Sir Winston Churchill and develop their public speaking skills.

Spires head of research and English specialism co-ordinator Helen Woolley, 34, said: “To get a hat-trick in this competition is amazing.”

Competitors from nine schools took centre stage for 10 minutes to speak about topics inspired by Sir Winston while their public speaking skills were put to the test.
