A WATER leak in St Clement’s Street, Oxford, should be fixed this weekend after four weeks – Thames Water has said.

Traders said water has been running down the road for at least a month but the water company has failed to clear it.

Richard Balkwill, co-owner of Slovakian restaurant Moya – which is opposite the leak – said he first reported it to Thames Water on February 7.

He said: “I have been a little disappointed that it has taken this long.

“It’s unpleasant for pedestrians because they are getting splashed rather a lot when cars are going through it.”

And Mr Balkwill said he called Thames Water again about the “steady stream”

two weeks after he first reported the problem but did not get a response until last week.

The leak has been seen seeping in front of Subway, hair salon Anne Veck, seafood eatery Fishers Restaurant, Italian restaurant La Cucina, entertainment store Sevenoaks Sound and Vision, store Wash and Sew, Chinese restaurant The Pink Giraffe and furniture shop And So To Bed.

Assistant manager of La Cucina David Kennedy said: “It’s frustrating. We all know how much we pay for water bills every year. I’m surprised it has been this long.”

Thames Water spokeswoman Becky Trotman said the company would not know what caused the leak on the four inch pipe until engineers start digging this weekend.
