OXFORD’S Purple Flag status has been renewed at an awards ceremony in Dublin.

The city remains one of 54 places across the United Kingdom and Ireland to have the status, which aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres.

It is similar to the Blue Flag scheme, which is awarded to high quality beaches across the world. Towns and cities which are deemed to have a diverse and vibrant night-time economy are eligible to be given the award.

They also must be able to prove a commitment to looking after customers and infrastructure.

Oxford City Council leader Bob Price said: “We’re very pleased to have had the Purple Flag seal of approval again for our city centre. By achieving Purple Flag status again this year, I hope it will reinforce the message that Oxford is a world class city, with an evening entertainment choice that is high quality, diverse and managed safely and effectively.”

Oxford was first awarded the status in 2010 and has kept it ever since.
