With reference to your reports of the sporting regime at Northfield School in Littlemore, Oxford in the early 1950s (Memory Lane, February 9), I wonder if I could add a couple of extra details that might be of interest.
The sports master and coach to the football teams from 1950-1952 was Mick Betteridge, a former West Bromwich Albion player, who had recently been transferred to Swindon Town. The school won the Pressed Steel Jubilee Cup and league championship in 1950-1 and won the Pressed Steel Cup again the following year, beating Botley School 5-1 in the final.
Goalkeeper Tony Hallatt was captain of the school at that time. He was also goalkeeper for Oxford Boys and won representative honours played for Berks, Bucks and Oxon schools.
With those contributions, is it any wonder Northfield was very successful?
