THE developers behind the proposed £100m redevelopment of Botley’s West Way shopping centre yesterday confirmed a deal with housing association Sovereign to replace Field and the former Vale House.

The deal was agreed following assurances that disruption to existing residents of the homes for the elderly and dementia sufferers would be minimal.

Doric Properties and Mace want to demolish the sheltered accommodation, Elms Parade shops and surrounding buildings to make way for a supermarket, six-screen cinema, health centre, gym, library, community hall, 50 flats and 525 student rooms.

The developers said Field House and the former Vale House would be replaced by 50 flats. Doric said the former Vale House residents would be transferred to Field House before the former Vale House is demolished and construction started on replacement accommodation.

The final phase of construction would see Field House demolished to make way for a new Baptist Church and hall.

A decision is due to be made by councillors later today on the controversial scheme which has received more than 1,200 objections.
