HIGHWAY workers are on course to remove the contraflow on Oxford’s ring road by Monday, Oxfordshire County Council said yesterday.

Its latest update on work at the Kennington and Hinksey Hill roundabouts said it was due to remove the system overnight on Sunday.

Cars have been diverted to the opposite side of the road during the work and have been unable to turn right at Kennington roundabout.

The turning restriction will be lifted by Monday, December 15, when signals are commissioned, the council said.

Lanes will be closed overnight from Monday to Friday December 19, when it is expected work will end.

The £8m project will run an eastbound lane through the Kennington roundabout with two lanes each for Abingdon Road and A34 traffic.

The Hinksey Hill work will include a new slip road from the ring road south onto the A34 and a widened approach to the roundabout.

The southbound A34 offslip will be closed from 10pm on Saturday to 6am the next day.

There will be a 10mph convoy westbound overnight on Sunday when the contraflow is changed.

The council had hoped to re-open two lanes on the ring road in both directions by the end of November.
