MEDICAL marvels across the county will be celebrated at a glittering ceremony tonight.

The Oxford Mail teamed up with Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust for the Hospital Heroes awards, to celebrate the outstanding work of its hospital staff.

From doctors and nurses, to porters, receptionists and volunteers, we put out a call to hear about staff who had gone the extra mile.

For the past five weeks, the Oxford Mail has been showcasing the finalists and those that nominated them to shine a light on how hard our hospital staff work.

Our top stories

Tonight the winners will be revealed at the trust’s Annual Staff Recognition Awards at the Museum of Natural History.

Chief executive of the trust Sir Jonathan Michael, left, said: “We have received some fantastic nominations for teams and individuals across the trust.

“Readers’ personal stories have painted a rich picture of care and highlighted the difference that our staff make to the lives of our patients.

“This recognition has proved a real morale boost for our hardworking staff."

To celebrate hospital staff, readers were invited to nominate the unsung heroes who have made a real difference in their lives.

Nominations for the second annual Hospital Heroes awards flooded in from July and months were spent searching for our Hospital Heroes of 2014.

Readers nominated medical staff within two categories, the Hospital Heroes Team award and the Hospital Heroes Individual award. Oxford Mail editor Simon O’Neill and Sir Jonathan then had the hard task of selecting the winners from a total of ten shortlisted entries. Mr O’Neill said: “We feel very privileged to be involved with these tremendous awards.

“Those who were nominated would no doubt be the first to point out that there are thousands more like them in the NHS carrying out life changing work every day. We owe them all so much and look forward to a long association with Oxfordshire’s Hospital Heroes.”

Nurses, midwives, consultants and all those behind-the-scenes were recognised for the support they have provided to cancer, diabetes, maternity, neurosurgery, neonatal and transplant patients.
