THE two-day ancient Woodstock Charter Fair began yesterday.
Managed by the Showmen’s Guild, the ancient fair, which dates back to the 15th century, is held each year in High Street, Market Street and Park Street, and includes fairground rides and amusements.
Former Woodstock mayor Robert Edwards, said it originated from the Henry VI Charter as a means of making money due to low income from Parliament.
The charter gives towns the right to hold fairs and would require an Act of Parliament to abolish that right.

Mr Edwards said: “In the old days it would have been a market fair, but this has changed to fairground rides.
“There are a particular two days in the year when they are entitled to come and the Showmen’s Guild decide which of their members will be the manager of the fair.”
Fair-goer, little Allegra Cowley, seven, said: “It’s my first time and I am havng so much fun!”
