Sir – The grand opening of the Witney Bees teaching apiary took place at Southdown Farm.

The weather was perfect and it was well attended. Ian James cut the ribbon to officially open the apiary and thanked those who were involved in the setting up of the apiary for all their hard work.

With some eight colonies of bees now established at the new teaching apiary we split into groups and undertook the usual inspections under the expert guidance of Keith Crocker and Ian James.

Refreshments were kindly provided by Camilla Daukes and Sue Meech and those that had brought picnics sat eating them admiring the view from under the gazebo and the beautiful new shed surrounded in flowers dotted with butterflies.

All in all it was a splendid day and one to note that the OBKA has increased its teaching apiaries by 100 per cent in one season and easily doubled the number of colonies under the responsibility of the committee.

A job well done by those in West Oxfordshire contributing to the survival, understanding and longevity of the honey bee.
