John Carter enjoys performances from Sister Sledge and other 80s acts at this year's Rewind South Festival

Fans of the 1980s were Lost In Music during a magical weekend at the Rewind South festival. American soul singers Sister Sledge were among the acts rolling back the years to delight thousands by the riverside at Henley on Thames.

The Philadelphia superstars had an adoring public in the palm of their hands as they belted out classics We Are Family, He’s The Greatest Dancer and Lost In Music.

And the big names from the decade fashion forgot just kept on coming as Marc Almond, Rick Astley and Holly Johnson rounded off what was every inch a super Saturday.

For those born in the 60s and 70s, Rewind is a chance to escape back to a time when Rubik’s Cubes were all the rage, computers were the size of a suitcase and there were only four television channels to choose from.

Fancy dress is de rigeur, and we clocked Worzel Gummidge, the Honey Monster and Super Mario boogieing alongside the Yellow Coats from Hi-de-Hi, Timmy Mallett and all the characters from Scooby Doo’s Mystery Machine. There are funfair rides, a roller disco and even a mock wedding venue. But the real magic is on the stage and it was down to former Haircut One Hundred frontman Nick Heyward to set the tone for what was truly a Fantastic Day.

With his jumper draped around his neck and barely a wrinkle accrued in the intervening 30 years, it was as if time had stood still as he breezed through hits like Blue Hat For A Blue Day, Love Plus One and Boy Meets Girl.

Mark King proved he’s lost none of his magnetism with a fine Level 42 set, including the brilliant Lessons In Love and Running In The Family.

And Jason Donovan had all arms swaying with Any Dream Will Do, Too Many Broken Hearts and Especially For You. It was a pleasure to watch these stars having fun on stage and showing a genuine affection for what Rewind is all about.

Our only disappointment was we couldn’t return on Sunday, when Tony Hadley, Jimmy Somerville and Howard Jones featured on another star-studded line-up.

One more thing. Ever tried a silent disco? Do it. It’s an absolute scream...
