ARMY officers are detonating several explosive Second World War shells found at a scrapyard in Bicester.

The Army were called to L C Hughes in London Road and the devices are currently in a neighbouring field, owner Gareth Hughes has said.

He said he started hearing explosions at about 12.30pm.

The shells were found when workers were clearing part of the scrapyard.

Thames Valley Police have said the shells were moved to the field yesterday in preparation of the detonations.

Spokeswoman Connie Primmer said: "We were called just after 4pm yesterday after reports of suspected explosive devices found at a scrap yard  in London Road. It is thought these may be WW2 devices.

"We secured the scene and put up a cordon and called the army’s bomb disposal squad.

"A detonation site was arranged in a nearby field. The army disposal squad is on site at the moment doing controlled detonations.

"At this time the first detonation has been completed."
