Thanks to the Oxford Mail’s story (July 17) I am pleased to say I have been inundated with good ideas for improving cycling in Oxford.

The city council is already committed to improving the canal towpath near Aristotle Lane, resurfacing Willow Walk in West Oxford and contributing to the county scheme to make cycling safer at The Plain. The city intends to put additional money into a revamped Frideswide Square with significant improvements for cyclists. We have removed barriers on many cycle routes. We will resurface the cycle-ways through Hinksey Park and along Meadow Lane, and provide new cycle racks at Redbridge and Seacourt Park & Rides.

The truth is we could spend any allocation for cycling in Oxford 10 times over. But there is lots more the city council can do and your readers’ suggestions will definitely help.

Popular ideas include better signed routes, getting parked cars out of cycle lanes, tackling dangerous potholes and more cycle parking places. As many residents pointed out to me, bicycles are a great way to get around, keep riders healthy and don’t cause pollution.

Every cyclist is another car off the road or another free seat on the bus. My intention by spending some of the taxpayers’ money is to get even more of us on our bikes.
