Sir – Hilary Grime’s letter (June 19) gives us the opportunity to detail the transport arrangements we are planning for the Cowley Road Carnival on July 6.

Unfortunately, the road closure will mean disruption but we hope that the enjoyment of this occasio, which brings together the Cowley Road community, and the wider community, outweighs this issue.

We have been in close discussions with the AA and Stagecoach to make travel on carnival day as easy as possible for all concerned.

On July 6, the Cowley Road will be closed to traffic from The Plain to Magdalen Road from 8am to approximately 7pm.

The road is kept closed for as short as time as possible, and the Streetscene team handling the road clean-up see it is a challenge to beat last year’s time.

Diversion signs went up on Friday, June 20, to advance-warn drivers of the road closure and the possibility of congestion on July 6.

Signs indicating the road diversion routes will be erected on Saturday, July 5.

During the road closure Stageocach bus Services 1/5, 10 & 12 will be diverted via Iffley Road, which runs adjacent to the Cowley Road and is a short walk away.

To answer Hilary’s letter, unfortunately it has not been possible to arrange for a shuttle bus to be brought directly to the point of the road closure because of the lack of a safe dropping off/picking up point and turning circle for the buses.

From Headington or Thornhill park-and-ride, take the 800 from Thornhill to Headington then catch an 8/9 to St Clements and walk through Rectory Road or Dawson Street to reach the Cowley Road.
