Sir – Your two-page article (Take a look around to see ‘combative’ Cook’s legacy, June 12) fails, in my opinion, to do justice to Mr Cook.

In many years of working with a great variety of our local councillors, I haven’t always agreed with Colin, but I have always found him ready to listen to reason and — more unusual — a politician who has done his homework thoroughly.

The point your article insufficiently emphasises is that in a constitutional democracy, we elect our councillors to represent us for the next so many years because of their general political line and personal integrity.

On a particular issue that may not coincide with the whims of the local media (who are, incidentally, unlike a politician, not periodically held accountable for their statements) but we should welcome a politician who takes a stand rather than sways with the wind.
