YOUNG scientists from across Oxfordshire united at this year’s Big Science Event.

Hosted by charity Science Oxford, children took part in the fifth annual competition to be in with the chance of winning £1,500 worth of science-themed playground equipment for their school.

Competitors were encouraged to devise, perform and record science experiments that would answer questions on topics interesting them.

Pupils from 11 shortlisted primary schools were invited to present competition entries at the grand final held at the University Museum Of Natural History, in Parks Road, on Thursday.

Cutteslowe Primary School, in Wren Road, took first place after the year six team impressed judges with its investigation exploring which materials create the most aerodynamic paper aeroplanes.

Event organiser Camilla Bell, pictured, said: “Organising this competition has been a truly rewarding experience.

Oxford Mail:

“Each school put a lot of work into their demonstrations and I was blown away by the presentations.

“All of the finalists should be proud of how far they have come on their early scientific journey.

“This is what being part of Science Oxford is all about, sharing my passion and interest in science with young schoolchildren all over Oxford.

“I’m already looking forward to the Big Science Event 2015.”

Entries from Radley Primary School, West Oxford Primary School and St Amand’s Catholic Primary School in Wantage were all highly commended.

Science Oxford aims to inspire young people to engage with science and technology.
