I READ with some sympathy John Mutton’s letter at his disappointment that Oxford’s adopted ship HMS Enterprise was not included in the D-Day supplement.
Surely he must understand that newspapers rely on people with knowledge to give them the information to produce their stories, articles, etc. I bet that not many people in Oxford knew of this link.
I would suggest that the local Royal Navy Association could have provided an account of not only HMS Enterprise activities on D-Day but also local surviving ‘Jacks’ who could have recalled their memories on that day.
I know the Mail would have snapped these up.
May I also suggest that John approaches the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum, in Woodstock, who I am sure would be interested in an RN presence in the building which has links Oxfordshire.
My own regiment, The Royal Green Jackets, had an adopted ship HMS Somerset, and I had the honour of dining on board when she was alongside in Plymouth some years ago. Navy hospitality is second to none!
