I AM delighted that Oxford City Council is holding its first Low Carbon Week from June 14-22.
I am actively participating in the Bike Week events which are part of Low Carbon Week, on the Tolkien’s grave and Treacle Well ride.
However, I would like to emphasise another way you can reduce your carbon footprint and, at the same time, save money.
Growing your own food means it is not transported over long distances using fossil fuels. You can also choose to grow your food organically, which means not using pesticides and herbicides which have been made using oil products.
This reduces your costs and your carbon footprint and saves wildlife such as bees and other pollinating insects.
So get digging and get growing. I grow many veg in my back garden: onions; tomatoes; carrots and herbs among others, but you don’t need a garden like mine. I recently spoke to an Oxford resident who, inspired by a free window box planted with flowers, was now growing her own salads and herbs mainly in window boxes.
