NEWS that city and Labour councillor John Tanner is calling on the county council to divest from fossil fuel companies is to be welcomed (June 7, Fossil fuels investment by county council ‘must stop’).
However, Labour is operating double standards here. The Labour-controlled city council refuses to engage with the Green Party’s proposal for an ethical investment policy, or ensure that the city council’s own investments in Unit Trust are free of fossil fuel concerns. Is Councillor Tanner a lone voice in the wilderness in his own party, or do Labour take climate change seriously?
As encouraging as it is to hear what Councillor Tanner thinks, actions speak louder than words. I’ll be watching with keen interest to see how Labour votes at the next county council meeting when the Green Party brings forward its divestment motion.
Cllr DAVID THOMAS, Howard Street, Oxford
