MY heart goes out to the single dad and his young daughter who may have to move to Birmingham because Oxford City Council has said that there are not enough homes in the private rented market under the Local Housing Allowance rate of £825.80 a month.

I think the real problem is glaringly obvious. During the 30 years of the Thatcher and Blair governments, thousands of council houses were sold off and no new council homes were built to replace them. We wanted to be a nation of homeowners and now we have a housing crisis of our own making. Home-ownership is now out of the reach of many and unless house prices drop dramatically, which is highly unlikely, we have to start building a lot more affordable homes to rent.
