WHILE driving through St Giles the other evening, paying particular attention to adhere to the 20mph speed limit, I was overtaken by two lycra-clad men on racing bikes. I glanced at my speedo which confirmed I was doing 20mph.
As they disappeared in the distance, I would estimate their speed to have been more than 25mph.
It occurred to me that had a speed trap been in operation at that time and were I doing the same speed as the cyclist, I would have been pulled over, issued with a ticket, fined anything up to £200 plus the usual victims surcharge and three points on my licence.
I am a cyclist and I wondered if the same laws apply, would I be subject to the same fine, would I have to produce my cycling proficiency certificate for it to be endorsed with three points?
As a partially-sighted friend of mine said, at least he could hear motor vehicles coming, with cyclists you get no warning.
Given the amount of 20mph zones in the city, should all cycles be fitted with speedos? Perhaps someone out there knows what the law is on speeding cyclists.
