THE results of six months of roadworks misery at Hinksey Hill and Kennington roundabouts could be so much better.

The new ‘hamburger’ layout at Kennington will be able to handle more vehicles. Work on the bridges underneath the ring-road is long overdue.

But where is the priority for sustainable buses and cyclists? The appallingly long traffic queues to get in and out of Oxford each morning and evening will be eased. But easier traffic conditions will attract yet more cars and lorries.

In a few years the traffic jams will be back.

What we need is a transformed transport system. Straight through lanes for commuter buses to and from Abingdon, for example. A safe cycle route between Hinksey Hill and the city, without taking your life in your hands. Easier access into and out of Redbridge park and ride.

Most of us will put up with roadworks if the final result is a permanent improvement.

My fear is that all the disruption and traffic chaos will deliver a second-rate traffic solution. Jams today and jams tomorrow.
