Pupils at Windmill School built two pedal cars with guidance from technology master Douglas Ward in 1970. A team of six in a blue and white ‘wonder-car’ and a reserve team of nine drivers planned to take the cars to Coventry for a tournament and raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

When headteacher John Moffitt left the village primary school in 1992, he was presented with a cartoon by Oxford artist Jim Needle, with slogans such as ‘Moff’s a winner’ and ‘Mighty Moffitt’. He is pictured with some of his pupils on his final day.

Arthur Bliss had an unusual hobby – collecting pub names.

When this picture was taken in 1961, the 76-year-old had a list of nearly 6,000 which he had compiled over 30 years.
