ONCE again, we’ve had a city council election by the first-past-the-post system. Once again, we have a large Labour majority, 33 out of 48 seats, and no Conservatives. The injustice of this is obvious.
In previous years, I have tried to analyse the results, which your paper’s reports fail to do. You have not mentioned which results are gains, holds or losses, nor which candidates were councillors previously, nor what percentage of voters turned out in each ward.
No doubt such details are only of interest to a small minority of your readers – like me.
As I am now 85, I have decided not to bother with first-past-the-post elections and their unfair results.
I look forward to being in the spirit world where I won’t have to listen to politicians prating about ‘British democracy’. A country is only democratic when the elected assembly reflects the political views of those who voted. I’m not surprised so few bother to do so.
