ONE questions the reason seven people found the aspiration to become a public servant in the role of local councillor to represent the Oxford Churchill ward at the election of May 22, 2014. The previous county council election (May 2, 2013) showed a total of 1,667 (18.40 per cent) votes cast out of this area’s electorate, totalling 9,056, which for whatever reason, is an indication of the electorate realising the futility of casting their vote.
The only conclusion to reach is whether the role of local councillor is an ego trip or the draw of the allowance subscribed by the many pensioners along with others. The candidates appear to have become most confident, finding it is not necessary to canvass individually the householders in order to prove their value and their existence.
