RESIDENTS and local Labour councillors have been campaigning for more than 10 years for a pedestrian crossing on the A40, at the bottom of Collinwood Road in Risinghurst.

So imagine the disbelief to read that a Toucan crossing is planned on the A4142 by Kiln Lane.

This crossing is part of a scheme to improve cycle links between Thornhill Park-and-Ride and the city. The funding is through a grant from the Department of Transport and can only be used to promote local sustainable transport schemes.

Who is listening to local residents when making these decisions?

Who has put the need for local sustainable transport before a safe crossing for local residents – including parents and children who have to cross two dual carriageways to get to school?

We need to learn the lesson of not waiting for a serious accident to happen before anything gets done. The fight goes on.

GLYNIS PHILLIPS, County Councillor for Barton, Sandhills and Risinghurst, New High Street, Headington
