DOUBTLESS to the satisfaction of the Government hierarchy, the issue of Maria Miller has gone very quiet – but several questions remain unanswered.
Is she to pay back the rest of the £40,000 over-claimed expenses or be allowed to get away with repaying only £5,800?
Is the £1.2m profit she made on the sale of a taxpayer-subsidised house subject to capital gains tax?
In different circumstances, there would almost certainly be headlines of ‘benefits cheat’, and, I am sure if any of us mortals had made a £1.2m profit on the sale of a subsidised house, there would be someone knocking on our door from HMRC.
How can this shameful saga be allowed to be swept under the Westminster carpet?
