THE proposal by the Government to make all new vehicles be fitted with automatic braking systems is a good idea at concept stage but will, if becoming law, be used by some drivers to speed in built-up areas.

Surely a more workable solution to safety improvements would be to make all speed limit signs interact with engine management systems, so reducing driving speed to within the limits.

Already some speed limit signs light up with flashing lights to approaching vehicles over the speed limit, so part of the improvements is already installed within the road signs. Too many accidents are caused by excessive speed.

My proposal would lower insurance premiums significantly. The problem would be with motor manufacturers who then would get reduced sales of high performance cars. High speed is for the race tracks not the public highways.
