Fifty regulars at the George Hotel set off on bikes to Oxford and back in 1983 to raise money for Helen House hospice. The five above are on a strange contraption that took part – from left, Jeffrey Jackson, Simon Lock, Paul Hodder, Grant Attwater and Judith Keeler.

The George Hotel was back in the news in 1986 when work began on a £500,000 scheme to create 25 new bedrooms. The mayor, Richard Wooldridge, is seen cutting the first turf, watched by Kingsmead Hotels’ managing director Peter Hazelrigg, left, and general manager Grant Attwater.
