Sir – Your letter from J Pearse (April 17) misses the information on why the strip patching has taken place on the A361.

Every year in Oxfordshire we do a planned surface-dressing, often called “chip and tar” to both give an improved wearing surface, but more importantly to waterproof the top of the road from absorbing water in winter, which then leads to frost-lift and then potholes.

It will then follow that money would be wasted if the road surface was not sound prior to “chip and tar”, and this is what has been achieved in the works to date.

Chip and tar of the 1.9 miles in Shipton- under-Wychwood will then take place in spring/summer months as part of the 43 miles of our annual program.
Hopefully this will prevent potholes forming near where Jim lives, and prevent it becoming another “bone-shaker”.
