Sir – I have no quarrel with councillor Hudspeth’s vision for a 21st-century transport system but that will take decades to achieve and in the meantime the county council and the Vale district council are making decisions which will turn the already congested A34 into a car park.

Most of the approved expansion in housing is along the A34 corridor between Didcot and Bicester and now the Vale wants to add a further 800 houses in the Radley/Kennington area which will all send traffic on to the A34. A large shopping centre with the main access road being the A34 is proposed for Botley.

Free school buses from Kennington to the traditional catchment school of Matthew Arnold are being withdrawn next year. The parents of Kennington will not send their children to another school.

Instead of four double-decker buses, the over-200 children will probably be transported by car to Matthew Arnold via the A34 at peak times.

What happens to our economy when the A34 seizes up before Ian’s vision is realised?

Have we had a foretaste during the floods and last week with some sewage repairs near Frideswide Square?
