Sir – Of all the people to accuse any organisation of ‘smug sanctimoniousness’, that Christopher Gray should do so of the John Lewis Partnership beggars belief.
His own over-developed sense of self-importance reveals itself in each line he writes, while his wholehearted signing-up to the middle-class values that Waitrose (and its staff) profit from so effectively oozes from every fawning word.
