RW Tucker (March 20) makes great play of the fact that the late Bob Crow lived in a council house and berates him for his lack of concern for those living on council housing lists.

Surely more fitting recipients for the correspondent’s ire would be those who for short-term electoral gain, sold off our stock of council housing while preventing local authorities from spending the proceeds on building more such houses?

Millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money has instead been diverted to private landlords and 30 years on from Thatcher’s Government, we now have more people renting from private landlords than local councils or housing associations.

We also have, of course, a crisis in social housing.
