Sir – Glancing through quickly before a proper read, the picture and story of young bellringer Tiggy Jones (January 23) caught my eye.

Being a ‘Bell Nut’, I was immediately interested and would like to say this to Tiggy: Well done and keep it up! You seem very keen; a lot of our young ringers who were extremely good  often gave up after a year or two — one such lad was ringing quarter peals at 12 and then just stopped altogether — a great shame.

Soon you will up to the more advanced things like Kent Treble, Bob Minor, Stedman Doubles, etc., sadly neither of which I learnt. Don’t worry about the box — even at my age when I do get a chance to ring I often need one for a comfortable ‘back stroke’!

Good luck and I wish you every success — you have a great talent which doesn’t always come too easily. Well done.

Sadly, I don’t get to ring on a regular basis now, so if you’ll pardon the pun, am a bit ropey at times but when I do get a chance to do so, the sheer joy of the rope in my hands returns, even if I do need the odd prompt when it comes to a ‘Bob’ or a ‘Single’ or whatever else happens to have eluded my memory.

Young Tiggy has a great future in campanology, it’s a great hobby and a very healthy one too.
I wish her every success in her quest to get better and better and have no doubt she will succeed.
