Sir – Since Mr Gray is usually such a stickler for correct usage, it was disappointing to find him applying the adjective problematic to his journey to Brighton, in the modern sense of being a problem.
I would argue for its original meaning of dubious or questionable. That’s what his spotlight on himself amounted to, in your issue of February 20, although ostensibly about the south coast seaside resort.
Soak, scoff and solipsism (or solecism) would have made a better title for the piece. Incidentally, I’d love to see you print a photograph, not of a grizzled grin for once, but of that kitsch-laden mantelpiece in the Gray sitting-room! Michael Moorey, West Hendred
