I AM writing in response to the article about the ‘living wage’ (February 25), in which a business leader makes objections to the idea.

If a so-called business is only viable if workers are paid the minimum wage, then it is not a business at all, it is exploitation of others for the benefit of the business owners.

Oxford Mail: Living Wage (4172488)

When such practices are uncovered in the third world, we call them sweat shops and we campaign for better terms and conditions for the workers.

Whichever political party brought in the minimum wage legislation should be ashamed of themselves for setting the rate so low. Even the more recent concept of a ‘living wage’ sets the rate at a pathetically low figure and the best way to get the unemployed back to work is to make sure that jobs pay a real wage that people can actually live on.
