Sir – I see the letters column has the usual ‘is there or isn’t there a God?’ debate smouldering away.

May I humbly suggest that this is a pointless question to ask. I believe this, I believe that, Is there x, or is there y? — who cares?

Cockroaches will be doing differential calculus before our brains can answer these questions.

Look at all the problems in the world caused by arrogant attempts to define God. Even in this letters column, the humanists and the Christians are arguing about who had the idea to argue in the pub first. You’re more likely to find truth at the bottom of your pint glass, dears! What experience, and all the great teachers do say, is that love is the way forward. Treat others as you’d like to be treated yourself, be kind and loving, put yourself in other people’s shoes, help people, help the environment, etc. Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, Karl Marx, John Lennon, were all going roughly the same way with this one. So, stop thinking and do! Gay people are being tortured and murdered in Nigeria and Uganda, children are starving all over the place, and welfare reforms are leaving vulnerable people in our own ‘developed’ country destitute, not to mention environmental catastrophe. We need all the love we can get. There, that’s your answer.
