Sir – It is encouraging to see (Report, January 30) that the county is to receive investment to deal with congestion, particularly around the A44, A40 and A34.

Less encouraging is that this is, no doubt, with a view to pushing ahead with the unpopular Northern Gateway proposal.

However, the plans to put traffic lights at the Cutteslowe roundabout seem completely misguided. The reason the traffic doesn’t flow in the rush hour is largely because the routes that the vehicles want to use (ie the Banbury Road and Sunderland Avenue) are very slow moving — how will traffic lights help here?

Conversely, outside the rush hour, the traffic tends to flow reasonably well and traffic lights would not be necessary.

It would very disappointing if the county was to spend huge sums of money, only to find that we have another ‘Frideswide Square’ on our hands.

I do hope that there will be extensive consultation on this proposal so that people who use this roundabout regularly have a chance to view detailed proposals and give constructive feedback.

Meanwhile, a few relatively cheap ‘Keep clears’ and some yellow cross-hatching would go a long way to helping the traffic flow.
