Sir – Your obituary appreciations of Tony Stockford and Bill Baker (January 30) remind us of two long-serving local Oxford and Oxfordshire politicians who respectively devoted themselves to the everyday needs and essentials of those they represented, always conscious that local politics can too often become mired in muddle and confusion.
As councillors, Tony Stockford and Bill Baker listened intently and acted swiftly, Baker born into the Iffley and Donnington area he represented and Stockford a later ‘settler’ in Blackbird Leys. Today’s Oxford and Oxfordshire politicians have much to live up to . . .
