Sir – It seems that my support for the Magnet has been misunderstood by Dr Cheke (Letters, February 6).
I did not express hatred for the guardians of Oxford’s heritage but only wished them to be more sensitive to our scientific culture. I have been associated with Science Oxford as a STEM Ambassador for many years and know at first hand, the valuable work they do in our schools.
The proposed Magnet would have been primarily a centre for school parties to participate and learn about science as a valuable adjunct to the fieldwork that Science Oxford carries out throughout Oxfordshire and adjacent counties.
I did not propose that the ancient castle mound be demolished. My main concern was that we should not allow the view of the mound and the preservation of an old registry building to block a first-class proposal.
Richard Hunt, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Oxford
