OXFORD United was formed as Headington in 1893, adding the suffix United in 1911 after merging with Headington Quarry. It was created by the Rev John Scott-Tucker, the vicar at Saint Andrew’s Church in Headington and a local doctor named Robert Hitchings. A football team was a way for the cricketers of Headington Cricket Club to maintain their fitness during the winter break.
It’s difficult to believe Oxford United moved to Minchery Farm in 1999 – almost 15 years ago. However, the legacy of Oxford United’s presence is still evident in Headington in the form of Saturday parking restrictions in Stapleton Road and Bickerton Road. Residents in Stapleton Road still have to apply for parking permits for friends and family to park in the road for a maximum of two hours on weekend visits. It’s even more incredible to believe residents are still fined for parking in front of their own homes.
I would be really interested to know if there are other roads in Headington which have Oxford United legacy parking restrictions. I have contacted the county council (incident number 625483) and they reassure me a traffic technician will investigate the issue.
