School begins its turnaround after 'inadequate' report

Oxford Mail: Ofsted inspectors visited the school last October Ofsted inspectors visited the school last October

THERE has been a shake-up of governors at a Witney school that was put into special measures by Ofsted.

A new chairman of the governors of Wood Green School, Vicki Stott, took up the role in January, replacing Bob Walton.

The school, in Woodstock Road, was rated inadequate by inspectors after a visit in October. It was previously ‘outstanding’.

Prime Minister and Witney MP David Cameron met headteacher Rob Shadbolt shortly after Ofsted’s visit last year.

At the time the governing body was criticised by inspectors, who said: “The governing body is not effective in challenging the school about the progress of all groups of students, including those who receive additional funding.”

In a monitoring visit made by inspectors on January 9, the school was told it is making positive improvements. Governors were also praised for tackling the issues identified by the recent review.

Ms Stott said: “The school’s leadership has made great strides forward, and is working closely together with a refreshed team of governors to achieve a turnaround for the school.

“I am pleased that we have received this vote of confidence in the quality of work we have completed so far.”

Pity the paper copy of the Gazette got the Chair of Governors name wrong in the second paragraph, although this has now been corrected on the online version.
