Sir – The measures taken by the Coalition Government to help Oxford tackle its increasing flooding problems are completely inadequate. Tory councillor, Rodney Rose, is right (Report, January 9).
David Cameron should immediately allocate funding for the conveyance channel, west of the city, so that future floods bypass Oxford.
The Environment Agency and the county council should work with the city to significantly improve protection for homes and to guarantee that main roads and the railway remain open even when there is flooding.
Hats off to the staff of the Environment Agency, the emergency services, and the county and city councils, for the their hard work in helping Oxford residents during the floods.
And congratulations to Oxford residents for their positive outlook, co-operation and determination to keep going during the latest overflow of water.
But it’s not acceptable that much of Oxford is brought to a standstill just because there are torrential rain storms. We don’t want to rely on a Dunkirk spirit to see us through. We want a solution.
