Sir – As an East Oxford resident, I was shocked to learn about the ‘community’ rates for joining Oxford University’s Iffley Road sports facilities.

To swim, a person has to pay an annual joining fee of £420 before paying for each actual swim, and £550 to play squash before paying to play a single game.

As part of the planning permission for building the facility, local residents were supposed to get a concession rate.

How is it that sport is so discouraged in this city after such a big deal was made of the Olympics?
