The Thursday Club received a cheque for £400, thanks to the generosity of staff and patients at Woodstock Surgery. The money was raised through a raffle towards the club’s running costs. Dr Robert Edwards is pictured handing the cheque to club members Charlie Deaney and Honor Harris at the Roman Catholic Church meeting hall in 1988.
Dr Robert Edwards appears in his role as town mayor in this picture. He was receiving the town’s new heraldic flag from Florence Budd, a member of one of the town’s oldest families. The family had decided to provide the flag after the original went missing.
A project on the behaviour of mice by pupils at Marlborough School earned them third place in the BBC Young Scientist competition in 1970. Their success attracted the interest of a drugs company, which used their findings in its research into tranquilisers.
