Sir – After granting permission for a three-storey block of flats in Lamarsh Road, in West Oxford, and with building work under way, those bright sparks involved in planning decisions at Oxford City Council must be delighted to see rising flood water on two sides of this building site.

The developers too must also be delighted, as they will be able to market the properties as ‘having lake views’.

It would be gratifying if the planners could reflect on their decision and admit that, with hindsight, it was stupid to allow such a development in an area where the flood risk is known to be high and where the drainage systems are already under considerable strain.
