Sir – We are sorry that Mr O’Halloran’s peace of mind is being disturbed by “grunting individuals” on two wheels (Letters, January 2), though not quite clear how they can be in a “narcissistic rush”.

We know that there are some cyclists who speed along the towpath but, in our experience, most are courteous and willing to slow down when they meet or pass pedestrians. Use of the path, (originally designed for horses), should be shared and the fact that it is deeply rutted, from Walton Well Bridge to Elizabeth Jennings Bridge, makes life uncomfortable and hazardous for cyclists and for buggy pushers.

Liberal Democrats have been calling for the surface to be improved, though not necessarily asphalted, ever since Sustrans withdrew their funding for this project in 2012. So we were delighted to read the letter from two Labour councillors (December 19) suggesting that the council was considering providing money for its improvement. We will be even more delighted if the resurfacing actually happens and if it is extended northwards to include the stretch in St Margaret’s Ward and not just North Ward.
