Sir – Margaret Pelling (Letters, December 19) is absolutely right to pinpoint the abuse, nay misuse, of the contraflow cycle track and the pavement by motorists in Oakthorpe Road in Summertown.
I, and others, have asked the police and the county parking attendants to do something about this problem for some time, but so far to no avail.
However, when meeting the local police recently I raised the issue and they have agreed to do all they can to stop the dangerous parking which obstructs the cycle track and causes cyclists to have to face oncoming traffic with little room for escape. They will start with an education campaign, fining offenders when possible and putting letters on windscreens to point out to offenders how dangerous their illegal parking is for the vulnerable road — and pavement — users. I would encourage anyone who sees vehicles parked by Lloyds Bank here to report it to one or both of the police on 101 and the parking attendants on 268107, so that the message gets out that this will be treated as an offence. Let’s hope for a safer cycling 2014.
