Sir – A new, ill-conceived cycle route on Wootton Road, Abingdon, will encourage cyclists to make a dangerous crossing of this main road.
Despite a gallant attempt by John Sanders to stop lives of children and vulnerable people being placed at risk, his argument was ignored along with several others.
Even the shared use paths are going to be narrower than the preferred minimum, solely to keep within budget, putting more vulnerable people at risk.
The cabinet member for the environment informed the meeting that the only place in Oxfordshire the council could identify as qualifying for a Government grant was this area on Wootton Road. Openly admitting that the scheme was flawed he continued, overruling safety concerns in order to spend the money before the April deadline.
