Sir – It seems to me that the ‘two tribes’ mentality that often divides cyclists and motorists is misplaced. Nobody wants to be involved in a road accident.

Therefore I wonder if it is time for motorists and cyclists to call a Christmas truce. A time for giving is upon us.

I would like to suggest some ways for road users to live out the Christmas spirit:

  • Cyclists should not ride two or three abreast when there is other traffic but motorists should not overtake when there is a continuous white line in the middle of the road.
  • Cyclists should not risk ‘under-taking’ a line of cars just before a junction where there is a left turn but motorists should make full use of their wing mirrors and indicators.
  • All road users should stop at red traffic lights, and obey signs signifying one-way systems and no right turns.
  • All road users should use lights when it is dark, dawn or dusk.

The rules of the road are designed to ensure the safety of all road users so if all road users obey the rules of the road the roads should be a safer place for everyone.
