Sir – Some confused thinking by Roger Moreton (Letters, December 5) about carols being “belted out” in supermarkets).
I doubt if he would like to hear them played quietly either. First, he is surprised that Muslims tolerate this — yet Muslims are probably more tolerant of hearing carols at Christmas in the UK than he seems to be, and they celebrate festivals of their own.
Does he ‘tolerate’ those — or is it that he doesn’t tolerate any religious expression? Second, he refers to the “unacceptable nature” of carols. Does he mean like Jingle Bells, White Christmas, The Twelve Days of Christmas and one of my favourites — Merry Christmas Everybody, by Slade? Too unacceptably doctrinal perhaps. Lighten up, Mr Moreton!
Supermarket managers are not ‘preaching’, they are providing music which the majority of customers like to hear, and have always liked to hear, at Christmas — a time for tradition and celebration.
